User profiles

Each subscribed user of complexity-research.org has a personal section, the user profile. This section has various fields that describe the scientific background of the user. Each field has a short description. Some, like the full name and affiliation, are mandatory to fill in at registration. They are needed for a comprehensive listing of all users. Others, like the CV, are at your own discretion. We do ask however that a Ph.D. student gives an accurate description of his or her Ph.D. project, especially the title, general description and contributions, if available.

If you think more fields are needed, please ask the admins to provide them. If you want to provide personal information that does not fit into the fields of the template please use the 'Add personal page' menu feature on the left.

You can always find and edit your personal information by
* clicking on 'My account' in the left side menu
* clicking on 'People' on the top menu and then choosing your profile
* by typing in http://www.complexity-research.org/user/[your username]

Once on your personal page, click on the 'edit' tab on top of your profile. Now you see a second row with tabs for each section of your profile, e.g., 'Account settings', 'CV', 'Profile', 'Publications'.

A special feature of the site is the way Ph.D. students and Ph.D. supervisors are linked. As a supervisor you simply fill in a comma separated list with the usernames of your Ph.D. students, e.g., 'eva, paul, martin'. The relevant field can be found under the 'Personal' tab and is called 'Ph.D. students. For each student filled in here, the site will automatically create an entry in your profile that contains the student's photo, name and current affiliation with a link to the students profile. The title of the student's thesis will appear. If this has not been filled in, the student's current research topic will appear instead. If the student has filled in the general project description and the project contributions, these will appear.

As a student you have a matching field under the 'Ph.D. project' tab, called 'Ph.D. supervisors.. Here you can fill in a comma seperated list with your supervisors. Again, the system will use these to provide a linked photo, name, and current affiliation on your profile page.

This situation is not final. Eventually the Ph.D. section should be similar to a project group, where the student and supervisors all have access and control over the details of the Ph.D. project description, and this information will be used to augment the page of students and supervisors. Such a solution will also give additional tools like a forum and blog that is special to the Ph.D. project. Once this solution is ready the fields you filled in will be incorportated. They will not be lost.

An example page for a student can be found here and for a supervisor here.
